The author does describe domestic abuse very well, but she seems to gloss over actual violence against animals, which would make this book a bit too dark for some readers. I do recommend this to those who are open to romance, fantasy, and fiction, but not for those who are looking for wholesome and realistic novels that are just flat-out scary.
